Were going to climb the Pfeifferhorn in the Wasatch Mountains. Sounds like a good idea to me. What if I don't even know what an ice-axe is used for? You'll learn.

The morning starts early as we park our car up Little Cottonwood Canyon at Red Pine Fork. Up Red Pine we go with our snow shoes. It was may so the temperature was quite moderate.

As we approached the top of the drainage, the surroundings became more "alpine" as the trees started to dissappear quickly in favor or rocks, snow and ice.

Timpanogos (Everest Ridge in the Winter)In preparation for our (Judd and myself) upcoming summer climbing trip to Russia, he thought it would be a good idea to test a few mountaineering skills on a local mountain. Most people climb this mountain from east side during the summer months (sometimes several hundred BYU students a day with their lovers). I would think if your trying to get the chicks, you should give this route a try. We decided to climb it's west facing (as seen from I-15) icy slopes in the frozen and dark cold of winter. Considering we saw absolutely no one and no tracks, my guess is only a few people summit during an entire winter.

We started the climb @ approx. 9PM sunday evening with our headlamps and a light rain in Utah county. The reason for climbing in middle of the night is merely for safety. The snow is much more stable and less likely to break apart or avalanche for that matter. Crampons and ice-axe were a must. The sun started to rise just as we finished climbing the "step" to the ridge. This was perhaps one of the most frightening 60 minutes of climbing in my life. A single wrong move would have sent me sliding 3000 feet over snow and rocks down a 75 degree slope.

In case you should ever feel the need to climb Timpanogos in the winter, I've highlighted in RED our actual boot prints in the snow. This is the way to get yourself off the 10 hour stairmaster and onto the ridge. Make sure to use caution as there are many bad things that could happen here. Keep in mind it was pitch black while were doing this except for the lights of the entire Utah valley below.
Once on the ridge, it was a delicate and gingerly walk to the summit. The ridge lines had cornices blown west to east that in some places were a good 15 feet long. Definitely didn't want to get too close to the edge as a cornice breaking could be the size of a large house.
Chickering is a very old piano company. This was was clearly restored considering the keys were plastic. My rank for this piano between 1 and 10 would be a 5. Sounded ok but plastic keys feel so cheap !

pcskiboyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16410997155806786727noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570300293494497576.post-47041857580528298402012-10-28T20:56:00.000-07:002012-10-28T20:56:18.541-07:00Beats Giving A TalkI will gladly play a musical number over giving a talk any day. Today was unique in that I had the chance to perform a musical number for Stake Conference in front of 1300 people on a beautiful ebony Steinway Concert D in the Park City Eccles Center. A special thanks to my little sister Han for letting me steal one of her piano books for musical ideas. My good friend Lana was sitting on the front row with her iPhone camera. I can't believe how bald I am. Geeze.
My first visit to the Grand Staircase Escalante was back when I was in highschool. This was several years before it became the famous place it is now. Back then, it was a much more peaceful place to visit. You hardly saw any other vehicles while you drove up and down the "hole in the rock" road to the various trailheads. Back then, you had to watch out that you didn't hit a cow head on, now days you have to be alert for "cruiseamerica" rental RV's going where they shouldn't. I've covered a lot of turf in this part of the state but for some reason have never made it out to "Neon" canyon and it's famous "Golden Cathedral" rappel. Luckily, a few co-workers expressed some interest so we hatched a plan.

Today's route requires us to climb left out of "Neon", skirt along it's rim and then drop in when we are good and ready for some serious "Michael Phelps" Olympic Style Swimming in frigid October water.

We are now about 1/2 mile east of the "normal drop-in". This choice will bring us more Narrows and cold swims than the "Neon sport-route". I'm personally happy we made such a choice.

After the 18 hour adventure of hiking, swimming, rappelling, route-finding, and spyder-climbing out of the deep Zion potholes of Imlay Canyon, the 6AM John B alarm came quite early. I was surprised to find I had any energy to embark on another full day Zion exploration through Englestead Hollow and eventually out the entire length of Orderville Canyon to the exit through the Narrows. Lionel dropped us off somewhere in what seemed like the middle-of-no-where East Zion and said his goodbyes to get home to his family. We made our way through the thick forest down towards the wash.

Englestead Hollow is not only famous for it's beauty as a tributary canyon to Orderville, but rather for it's world famous 300 foot rappel which any "newbie" canyoneer might find a bit intimidating. In other words, you might not want to make Englestead your first canyoneering adventure.

John B on rappel literally descending into the "gut" of the earth. This is officially the longest "rap" I have ever experienced. There are very few 300 footers anywhere in Zion. I have to admit it was a bit "gut wrenching" going over that first lip to a 300 foot void below.

My sweet late Grandma was notorious for clipping things out of magazines and newspapers that reminded her of people she knew. This little photo she clipped out of a travel magazine is one of my most prized possessions hanging in my home office. She gave it to me sometime in college when I started to rock climb and rappel off cliffs. I think she was trying to tell me something. If she only knew what I was up to this weekend. I miss you Grandma S.
Of all the technical slot canyons in Zion National Park, there are 3 that are considered the "holy trinity" by veteran canyoneers. They are Heaps, Imlay and Kolob Creek. These canyons have earned their respect for several reasons such as amount of time required to complete, certain advanced technical skills and overall high level of danger that can be encountered due to changing conditions related to weather and water in the canyon. Today's adventure would start out @ 4AM in the morning hiking up the Angels Landing trail and heading west to Imlay Canyon.

There really is no trail to the head of "Imlay Canyon". You basically follow your GPS and look for significant landmarks, one of which was called the "Cleaver". This is Zion Canyon hiking at it's finest.

As you can see, there really is no trail. The park service requires a special permit to access this canyon and only allows 1 party of a maximum of 6 people per day to enter. Let's just say, we saw or heard no one until we reached the Zion Narrows.

This first obstacle is known as the "log soup". It is supposed to be really nasty when it's full of water. We luckily hit it when it was dry.

We suited up into our "wet gear" and dropped into our first obstacle. One of Imlay's most challenging features is it's large "pot holes". These are large holes carved into the water course of the canyon that can be extremely difficult to climb out of during times of low water. When they are full of water, you can generally just swim up to the edge and climb over.

This was one of the more difficult "pot holes" to climb out of. It required the use of a "talon hook" which is basically like a rope ladder connected to a grappling hook. Lionel and myself were a 2 man team in the front negotiating pot holes and setting up hand lines for the guys behind us. There are many different methods for getting yourself out of potholes. On several occasions, I was able to throw my pack over the lip of the hole until it lodged itself and I was able to climb up and over.

I spent many hours playing this piano on their patio since the day it was brand new. Grandma and I loved to play old jazz standards and of course hymns together. We never played this song together but I thought it was an appropriate choice for a "Steinway". I sure miss those 2 great people!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQu2Q9gtRgVqATg5TcoI9Mz1e38NkFuAYs6yafPNVxoGBjst978MS96eMgTSBBGOl1xlyaJtNwwg8AO6sH8tlQWY2qcqdcIihGl8nPyt1G6v55HOQca74pMS0-5zoyxp94p7ESWdzJMeA/s400/100-0041_IMG.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5633148587703646882" />

pcskiboyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16410997155806786727noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570300293494497576.post-81106475626314826682011-06-28T11:12:00.000-07:002011-06-28T11:19:47.051-07:00Monday RideOne of my favorite bike rides. We park in Kamas and ride to the top of Wolf Creek pass and back. 45 miles, 3300 feet of climb and 2.5 hrs. roundtrip. Not bad for a nice weekday evening ride in the Mountains. Weather lastnight was perfect!! Might make it a weekly ritual.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0IuuPkAxbX2EKOGL34mKov-saIEhvJN2Ak25HdjfNoqhgfGebserLpua-amugPQyo948ro2zsmG6g5vjTPa0oyzfSl3d7QjHwQVzoCcveyBHNZmqqhfHQi8jc92lK5Wm8Bvz66NxvrxE/s400/IMG_1222.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623336182072103506" />

Total Miles for 2011: 417.66
Total Elevation for 2011: 32356pcskiboyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16410997155806786727noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570300293494497576.post-10881456523553025552011-06-08T14:52:00.000-07:002011-06-15T21:58:29.789-07:00Grand Staircase WeekendI spent quite a bit of time here before Clinton designated it a national monument. It was much more peaceful back then. You could spend 3 days in a canyon and see no one. Now you have to get a permit to see most of it. If you know where your going, you can still find quiet peaceful places to camp, although it may require a car that can take a beating, like the FJ.

<img style="display:block; I had never heard of the guy playing but thought what could be better than free tickets? I was mesmerized by the amazing sound and style and have tried to adopt it myself ever since. While listening to Pandora the other day, I was presented by one of his songs and decided to come home and learn it "my way". Here is my cover of Danny Wright's "Missing You".

(Note: This is played by ear. I guess my response is "no, not really. But sometimes I like to sit down and make up music.". Here's an example of my recent musical thoughts. I'm a bit embarrassed at the delay difference in my video and audio but I was too lazy to fix it. Please forgive.

pcskiboyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16410997155806786727noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570300293494497576.post-10104235837064716592011-05-15T20:29:00.000-07:002011-05-15T21:35:11.025-07:00Change of PlansOriginal plan for today was to load the bikes in the truck and head for the east side of the old pioneer trail "Hole In The Rock". From there we would ride the bikes to the Glen Canyon park boundary and come back. I've traveled the west trail many times from Escalante, Utah. For some reason I've had the east side on my list for years. Probably because it's much more remote, less traveled and pretty much requires a Moab style 4x4 or equivalent. The west side out of Escalante is family van friendly but long and full of washboards.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWDcSEsHBT1kV4bSSo3_3hBqmUSKUb6Dl1VKTbp8Mc5690gz63ZRVMFZB696lT-uPNQz4VRA2ihneju46gsmjBKyzycgb2J5ci9V2Ql8RAnd4XKHMs0J5qgjSF7fMw8Jd8TfvTgXT-6Rc/s400/IMG_0568.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5607152647640679250" />

After holding a brief round-table, we decided that the skies looked a bit unsettled and decided to lock the bikes up and go to plan "B". Here's the view of my back patio from base camp. We then headed east on 95 to the Cedar Mesa. We started up the dirt road in the Manti LaSal national forest around 10 and found a nice little base camp.

Next morning we loaded the bikes and made our way to a little ruin i've been trying to find for over a year. There are many photos of this on the web but no one is willing to reveal it's location. Long story short, I found it. After the long and arduous journey, it became clear while it's a rare find. According to the logbook, It hasn't seen visitors since November of 2010.

The roof is fully intact and the place hasn't been trashed like most ruins in the cedar mesa. This is where we will launch north on a jeep road into the Maze district of Canyonlands National Park. The Maze is considered the most remote part of the park. I must agree. Price of admission is 50 miles of rocky nasty road.

This is Van waking up in Hotel Hite. I feel like I have truly experienced Siberian living. Here is a recent bike ride up Big Mountain. My favorite training ride. This photo is a good 1/2 mile from the 1st major switchback. Guess I'll have to wait a few more weeks to hit the pass. Sheesh.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcNdyjuUmgf73dMAQtCsbTGli0-7fsD1Cq6Q1j_bp7nRIhQpKGuMu8tw8Br7LaONomOHBfJvKi5m1zQU07t6VgUgI07f0tmRhKvdWL1MjmvkBVOcdt-WQIloyCgqfguu7_GWBpcgk_a_o/s400/IMG_0187.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5602664150705008914" />pcskiboyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16410997155806786727noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570300293494497576.post-31918399665705307512011-04-17T20:21:00.000-07:002011-04-17T20:46:29.157-07:00Weekend Warrior in Wild UtahThe new title photo of my blog is compliments of my wife who happened to capture this killer shot of me riding my bike along a knife-edge ridge at Caineville Utah. Caineville is normally the home turf to some of the world's craziest motorcycle riders as well as environmentalists trying to shut the place down. I decided to give my kids a taste of bike riding in a world famous moto-mania mecca. In case you were wondering, those are the Henry mountains in the background.

My kids must think I'm nutz. Decided I would bring the kids back. Surprise is the canyon directly above Will's noggin. Easy 1.5 mile hike. And even better pretty much deserted due to it's distance from the local Applebees and Marriott hotel.

Sasha boo trucking up the wash in her keen sandles.

The many shades of brown deep in Capital Reef.

Allison in the narrows.

pcskiboyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16410997155806786727noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570300293494497576.post-38003009562915777062011-04-15T20:48:00.001-07:002011-04-15T20:48:12.151-07:00Eyes of SinbadA fine little hike with the kids today in the San Rafael Swell.

The larger cave has a huge opening in the ceiling.

View of west canyonlands from Sinbads right eyeball.

Allisons favorite sign at Stans Burger shack.

pcskiboyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16410997155806786727noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570300293494497576.post-62645115158026903362011-04-09T20:38:00.001-07:002011-04-09T20:50:33.043-07:00Making GoodAnyone who appreciates Stephen Schwartz's musical "Wicked" might find this tune interesting. This is a brilliant song he wrote and later cut from the show. It was ultimately replaced by the song "Wizard and I" which is also quite good. I became fascinated when I heard a recording of Mr. Schwartz himself playing it on the piano. It's an extremely fast song and to make matters worse, it's in the miserable key of E, which many of his songs are. I decided I had to learn it when I heard him play it. I know pretty much nothing about singing, but in my non-expert opinion, this girl sounds like she does. Hopefully my mistakes aren't too obvious :)

pcskiboyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16410997155806786727noreply@blogger.com1
